Getting to Lisbon
This is the biggest practical difference. Sintra has a direct suburban train to Lisboa Rossio in about 40 minutes. Ericeira has no railway: it is about 45 minutes by car via the A21 and A8, or around an hour by Carris Metropolitana bus from Campo Grande (the fastest line runs at weekday rush hours only). For daily commuting without a car, Sintra is the clear choice.
Surf, sea and lifestyle
Ericeira was dedicated a World Surfing Reserve in October 2011, around 5 km of coast with breaks such as Ribeira d'Ilhas and Coxos; the town is compact, lively and international. Sintra's coast — Praia das Maçãs, Praia Grande, Azenhas do Mar — is also surfable and wilder, with the historic town, forest and palaces inland. Sintra's north-west coast around Magoito (parish median €2,655/m²) is the quiet, lower-priced middle ground between the two.
Schools and services
Sintra has two international schools, CAISL and TASIS Portugal, in Linhó, plus the new Hospital de Sintra and a much larger service base. From Ericeira, Linhó is about 30 minutes by car.
